What is the meaning of Ash Wednesday?
February 25th, 2009 by Alfred

Ash Wednesday is the 1st day of Lent. Originally ashes were applied to the top of the head or Christians and Catholics. Today the pastor or priest applies ashes to the foreheads of Christians and Catholics (in the shape of a cross) while saying, “For dust you are and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).
In the Christianic belief this is what God said to Adam and Eve after they had a taste of the forbidden fruit and fallen into sin. This indicates to the first sinners the bitterest fruit of their sin, namely death. During Ash Wednesday ceremonies, each believer is supposed to think of their sinfulness and mortality. Then think of their need to repent and get in good with God before it is too late.

Many Catholics and Christians leave the ashes on their forehead for the whole day. They do this to show all people are sinners in need of repentance and through God all their sins can can be forgiven through faith.
