Melasma

What is melasma? They’re pretty common than you think. Melasma are the brown spots on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip or jawline. They are triggered by either hormones or light. Women above the age of 20 are more susceptible since that’s the time when a woman’s hormones change. It could be through pregnancy, oral contraceptives or even hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women. People of any skin type can get melasma, but people of color are more prone.

My biggest frustration is that I developed bad melasma when I was pregnant with my son. It’s like having a mask on your face. I did peels; I did lasers; I tried every product and saw every doctor.”

- Brooke Burke

The cause of melasma is believed to be the increase in cell production that releases pigment melanin. The increase in melanin production may range from it being hereditary to prolonged sun exposure and even to the use of birth control pills.

The usual treatment for melasma are chemical peels, microdermabrasion, skin lightening products, mesoroller, laser skin rejuvenation and sunscreen.
