North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Il has died. In 2008, Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke. Although the announcer said the cause of death was due to physical and mental over-work, reports say he died from heart attack on a train while traveling.

The announcement of the death last Saturday was made last Monday by state television from the capital, Pyongyang. North Korea has been grooming Kim’s third son to take over power from his father.

President Lee Myung-bak convened a national security council meeting upon hearing the death of Kim. The South Korean military is on high alert.

Kim Jong Il may be best remembered for his ambitions of nuclear power and for boosting North Korea’s nuclear program at the expense of millions of his starving countrymen and women. He was 69.
